Abstract The chronological reconstruction of Petra monuments is a challenge since typically they lack written inscriptions and most inscriptions discovered are in secondary contexts. The chronology of Qasr el-Bint, the main temple of Petra, has been debated for decades and the question remains unanswered. This work aims at better understanding the chronology of the Qasr el-Bint by radiocarbon dating wood wedges discovered between the stones of its walls. According to the radiocarbon results, a terminus post quem of the beginning of the first century ad might be assigned for the construction of the Qasr contradicting the earlier chronologies that depended on inscriptions out of context as shown by the recent excavations in the Temenos. This conclusion is supported by the similarity of the architectural decorations of the Qasr to the Khazneh, recently dated to the late years of Aretas IV or later, which probably implies a similar date to the Qasr.
