Abstract The author reflects on Eucharistic Communion of children in the light of the singular love of Christ for them, as is manifested in the Gospels (1st chapter). The second chapter explains how the Church’s history has expressed or failed to express that special love of Jesus toward children in the practice of Holy Communion. The reservation of Communion to children who have reached the use of reason began only in the twelfth century and only in the West (Latin rites). The custom of giving Communion to infants fell into disuse for various reasons, which were not theological. Pope Pius X, with the decree Quam singulari finally gave an authentic interpretation of the criterion of "use of reason", a criterion that had been abused unnecessarily postponing the first Communion. The codified canon law (CIC 1917 and 1983) has assumed substantially the provisions of this decree. Nevertheless, currently, in many places, the postponing of first Communion of many children who have the use of reason, because it requires an extended catechetical preparation, is a practice condemned by the decree Quam singulari as deplorable abuse. In the third chapter, the author reflects on Communion for children on the basis of aforementioned data. The first object of reflection is the particular love of Christ for children and the reason for this predilection. Then the author explains how this love points toward the practice of giving communion to infants and exposes the meaning of this communion, answering objections. Finally, the author reflects on the Communion of children with the use of reason, considering the current legislation in the Roman rite, and on the application of the criterion of the use of reason in accordance with the love of Christ and the true good of children. He arrives at the conclusion that there is need of a metanoia, a change of mentality, to assimilate the spirit of Christ in His singular love for the little ones. It is necessary to convert "controllers" to "facilitators of grace" (Pope Francis) offered to favorite friends of Jesus.
