Abstract The positive portrayal of the nations praising Israel’s God in Tobit 14,6-7 stands in tension with more negative depictions of Gentiles elsewhere in the book. This essay explores the relationship between Jews and Gentiles and the role of Jewish witness in the book of Tobit, arguing that Tobit is not primarily concerned with Israel’s openness or inclusive attitude toward Gentiles but with God’s sovereignty and Israel’s superiority over the nations. Thus, witness is conceived not as active witness to the nations but as the natural overflow of Israel’s acknowledgment of God before the nations.
