Abstract The first verse of chapter 19, of the Gospel of James, based on the pressing dialogue between Joseph and the midwife looked for and found by Joseph himself to help Mary during the childbirth, underlines that the midwife's abilities are those outlined in the maieutics: through her questions she helps Joseph to express the young girl's identity (Mary). On the contrary her experience as midwife will be useless because when she arrives the baby had akready born, as you can see in the following verse.
