Abstract This essay focuses on Julia Balbilla's role as a female author and moreover as an important historical character. Balbilla is the author of four epigrams written on the left leg of the "Colossus of Memnon" at Thebes (Egypt). She is the last model of the use of the literary eolic dialect, but she has often been misunderstood (e.g. M. Yourcenar's Mémoires d'Hadrien) and defined as a minor figure.
