Abstract The identification of procavia as שָׂפַן, as first proposed by Shaw (1712), replaced the
identification as Jerboa which Bochart (1663) had suggested. Between 1778 (Pallas) and 1853 (Rödiger, Thesaurus III), zoologists and commentators on the Bible discussed this new identification, finally accepting it. Within German zoological and theological literature the nomenclature evolved in the 18th and 19th centuries from hyrax to procavia and Klippdas / Klippdachs to Klippschliefer. Towards the end of the 20th century, when the debate was renewed about whether procavia is a ruminant zoologists, as previously, have firmly rejected the idea.
