Abstract The main purpose of the present article is to shed fresh light on the function and use of the מָשָׁל
in the Old Testament. It seeks to offer a novel attitude or a different point of view about the Hebrew מָשָׁל:This literary term is discussed along with the main characteristics of metaphorical speech because the extensive use of images and figures is one of the most distinctive literary marks of the Hebrew מָשָׁל: The article emphasizes that the signification of this literary term cannot be reduced to merely one particular form-critical meaning rather it is more appropriate to show the ways it can function. It is also demonstrated that the Hebrew מָשָׁל with its absorbing metaphorical character is an excellent tool for communication, open to a variety of interpretation, and captivates the audience’s attention. Therefore, this essay underlines the importance of a reader-orientated approach, which highlights the role of the historical and actual reader in the process of the interpretation.
