Abstract This study examines Elijah’s magical acts within the drought narrative (1Kgs 17-18). Within this narrative, Elijah does not perform magic in order to satisfy the basic needs of life, but rather to demonstrate the power of God YHWH to the king, to the people of the kingdom, and outside of Israel, and that his God YHWH is the only true God. An emphasis on God’s word minimizes the magical character of Elijah’s magic and intensifies God’s power.
