Abstract This article compares the secondBook of Maccabees with a collection of very different but nearly contemporary texts, namely 1 Enoch. Of particular interest is the understanding of time in the
texts. Their views of space are largely inseparable from the specific concept of time. Finally, the
categories of soma and psychē are compared with the literary and historical-critical methods.
