Abstract The Persian King Darius made a visible impact on the Near East during the sixth century B.C.E. An important part of Darius’ foreign policy, his Egyptian campaign, is perhaps reflected in the book of Haggai. Scholarly opinions diverge regarding Yehud’s role of supplying grain for the Persian army as allegedly portrayed in the book of Haggai. While the biblical account is ambiguous, archaeological evidence of active grain storage in the Levant during the Persian period and other data pertinent to grain storage – relating to ancient climate, population estimates, and theoretical comparison of crop consumption – support a hypothesis that the Yehudites most likely did not produce enough surplus to meet the Persian army’s expenditure.
