Abstract Four ideologically neutral narrative components – infinitives absolute, markers of time, יש ('there is/are'), and הנה ('look/behold') – are reviewed across Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. The non-use of יש and minimal use of the others in the shared portions of those books identifies these synoptic materials as unusual within Chronicles and very distinctive among the components of Samuel and Kings. Quite independent of theories about how 'Deuteronomistic' or 'Chronistic' authors may have worked, these data converge with the thesis that the synoptic portions were also the principal shared source of Samuel-Kings and Chronicles. In combination, they assist the identification of strata within the several books.
