Abstract The article disputes the topic of pseudepigraphy within the context of theological theory. Historical research leads to the conclusion that some biblical texts were not actually written by the attributed authors. What does this mean with regard to the reliability of these texts and even more to the reliability of the whole scripture? Examining the prior research of the Gospel of John and the "disciple whom Jesus loved", the article rises not only the question whether it is possible to shed light upon the origin of the Gospel of John, but, consequently, how historical research matters for the Christian faith in general, as this faith is based on the reliability and authority of the scripture.
