Abstract Scripture plays a more central role in the Gospel of Matthew than in any other gospel. The author of the gospel repeatedly points to the fact that his narration about Jesus of Nazareth can be read as the 'fulfillment' of Scripture. He provides proof that God's will in Scripture agrees with the words and deeds of Jesus as they are narrated. In a cursory reading of the Gospel the formative role which this specific, 'scriptural' perception of reality plays for the fictional portrayal of events will be shown. According to Ernst Cassirer's 'Philosophy of Symbolic Forms', this hermeneutical function of the Scriptures can be epistemologically classified as 'symbolic form'. For Matthew, Scripture is the particular manner of human 'world understanding' through which the Jesus story is given meaning.
