Abstract Based on the literary tendency to level all differences between factual and fictional narration, this essay presents 'unreliable narration' as a paradigm which enables a distinction between fictional and factual narration. The identification of three different axes of narration serves to classify the reliability or unreliability of the narration. These differences between reliable and unreliable narration can be analyzed with regard to two perspectives: the institutional frame and rules influencing the readers' expectation as well as the paratextual and textual signals. This leads to a survey of the different functions of unreliable narration in fictional and factual texts.
