Abstract On the occasion of her 150th birthday on December 12, 2013, this article calls to mind and honours Dr. phil. Barbara Clara Renz (1863-1955) by analysing her life and work. She was the first woman of the former kingdom of Bavaria to receive a doctorate; her life was a courageous and desperate struggle to gain reputation as a female intellectual, her readings of the Bible are informed and moved by ethnology, philosophy of religion, her catholic faith and her commitment for women’s higher education.
