Abstract The article addresses the controversial interpretation of the phrase “the husband of one wife” (1Tim 3,2). It offers a brief survey of the various interpretational options and argues that the main issue at stake in 1Tim 3,2 is the absolute necessity for the aspiring bishop to be a married person. The pronominal μιᾶς (“of one”) is to be understood as a reference to the bishop’s martial fidelity. This exegetical solution is based on the four arguments: 1) grammatical argument, 2) formal-logical argument, 3) text-contextual argu-ment, and 4) text-pragmatic argument.
