Abstract The manuscripts of the thirteenth-century Descriptio Terrae Sanctae by Burchard of Mount Sion fall into two main groups, offering, respectively, a longer and a shorter text. Earlier scholars have seen the shorter text as the original, of which the longer is an expansion. This study suggests on internal evidence that the longer version is Burchard's original text, and that the shorter is a précis designed for different readers and more devotional needs.
