Abstract It is a commonplace that the Book of Proverbs presents a col-lection of collections, usually assumed to be seven: 1-9; 10,1-22,16; 22,17-24,22; 24,23-34; 25-29; 30,1-31,9; 31,10-31. Central are the extensive pro-verbial ‘Solomonic’ collections in 10-22,16 and 25-29, whereby this second and presumably older collection exhibits an additive and the first one a circu-lar traditio-historical growth; both are extended by sayings of partly foreign origin, viz. in 22,17-24,22; 24,23-34 and in 30,1-31,9. Finally, the theologi-cally marked and hermeneutically important first collection in 1-9 both con-stitutes, together with 22,17-24,34, the first part of a framework for 10-22,16 and, with the last unit in 31,10-31, the same for the whole book.
