Abstract Contrary to the long-held opinion, this contribution argues that the Song of the Sea in Ex 15 does not represent an old tradition, but is rather an example of exegetical writing in the Persian period. The different authors of Ex 15 drew on both temple theology and the Exodus narrative and merged them fruitfully. Thus, the poem became a paradigm for the combination of hymn and history that had a great impact on the further literary and theological development in the Hebrew Bible.
