Abstract A nexus of problems is bound up with the concept of »written prophecy «. This contribution discusses how, in the light of current knowledge, the conditions may be described under which written prophecy emerged, on the one hand, in the ancient Near East and, on the other, in the Old Testament; what was the intention behind the production of the prophetic books in the Old Testament; and finally, what led to the appearance of genuine written prophecy without any oral basis. It calls for serious attention to be given alike to the diversity of the written forms of prophetic words in the ancient Near East – the texts from Mari, Assyria and Tell Deir ‛Allā each offer a different kind of assistance for the understanding of biblical prophecy – and to the diversity of the prophetic books in the Old Testament, where none has the same structure as any other. In addition the origin of written texts, of the prophetic books and of genuine written prophecy are seen as stages in the continuing growth in authority of the prophetic message.
