Abstract In this article, the author argues that the flower depicted on several coins struck by the Hasmonaean rulers of Judea during the second-first century BCE is in fact a rose and not a lily as previously suggested by other scholars. In addition, the author suggests that the rose depicted on Hasmonaean coins is modeled on the floral emblem of the island state of Rhodes. Topics addressed include: the lily as a Jewish symbol, floral imagery on Hasmonaean coins, the relationship between Rhodes and Jerusalem, and the question of whether the Rhodian-style rose imagery is connected with foreign mercenaries.
