Abstract The Wisdom of Ben Sira was published in Finnish for the first time in the seventeenth century. Together with the other Old Testament Apocrypha the Wisdom of Ben Sira became, however, relatively unknown, as the most Bible editions were published without the Apocrypha. But there are examples that show us that some Finnish artists and writers, in particular, were interested in Ben Sira’s practical wisdom. Ben Sira’s positive statements concerning wine have had the consequence that a knight order was dedicated to the Jerusalemite sage in Finland. Even the Finnish novels usually mention Ben Sira in contexts that deal with the consumption of wine.
