Abstract This article aims to trace the development of the Ethiopiclanguage, specifi cally the ge‘ez dialect, in which the EthiopianOrthodox Church has preserved his biblical manuscripts of theOld as well as the New Testament, and of other theological works. It describes its origins, its development during the AksumiteEmpire and during the Christianization period of Ethiopia. Itpresents also the main features of the language, comparing it toother biblical languages. At the end, it lists the main contributionsthat the Ethiopic language has to the biblical sciences, speciallythe compared linguistics, textual criticism and the lexicographyof the Old Testament.
