Abstract This article analyzes what was the concecpt of health and disease in the Greek-Roman world and its infl uence in biblical Judaism and in New Testament, Italso seeks to determine what were the convictions of Jesus regarding theetiology of the infi rmities and the source of health based upon the synopticGospels and other New Testament texts compared with the Old Testamentbackground. The study was structured on a bibliographical research on theconcept of health and disease in the Greek-Roman world and approaching themain infi rmities recorded in Bible and in the Talmud. It is defended that Jesusof Nazareth believed disease is the result of Yahweh’s law transgression and, therefore, health is synonymous of a relationship with Him and obedience tothese laws and the healing of the body never is purely physical, neither thehealing of the soul purely spiritual, but both are related.
