Abstract Recent theories that locate the Biblical Pithom (Exod 1,11) at the Late Bronze Age site of Tell er-Retabah fail to take account of the archaeological evidence and the Greco-Roman literary sources that demonstrate that a well known city called Pithom was located at Tell el-Maskhuta in the Iron Age. That the occurrence of the toponym Pithom in Exod 1,11 is an anachronistic addition to the Exodus tradition is still the best view.
