Abstract Usually approached as an early Christian apocryphon, the Gospel of Nicodemus continues to resonate with the lives of many contemporary Christians as a source of religious inspiration and devotion. This paper investigates how and why a fourth-century apocryphal work found a following in rural Manitoba, where it was recently translated from German into English and disseminated in local Mennonite communities.
