Abstract Friend of Jesus or coward to be condemned ? Pilate’s role is construed in contradictory ways in different Ethiopic traditions. A saint and even sometimes a martyr for the erudites and poet writers, Pilate is judged severly by simple believers. These contradictory judgments come from different forms of profound piety and take into serious account the canonical narratives.
