Abstract One of the main features of the numerous so called Life of Christ written in the late Middle Ages is the presence of copious extra canonical material, and mostly apocryphal material. Two bestsellers of the devotional literature, pseudo-bonaventurian Meditations on the life of Christ and Ludolf of Saxony’s Carthusian Life of Christ, are the starting point here to study the place and influence of apocryphal traditions in narratives about Virgin origins and youth from her conception to her marriage with Joseph on the one hand, and about Christ’s infancy on the other hand. We identify the sources of our two authors and we examine the reasons of their choice and their way of introducting, combining and sometimes altering apocryphal traditions. Then we will be able to value the importance of these apocryphal traditions beside other extra canonical material.
