Abstract In the context of Jewish monotheism in the Persian period, this article contributes to the debate about figurines in Yehud by drawing attention to the 51 figurine fragments found by the Shiloh excavations in the City of David (1978-1985) in the Persian stratum. These figurines have been found in four areas and show typological continuity with Iron Age figurines. This article problematizes attempts to assign these figurines to the Iron Age in the excavation reports and argues on archaeological grounds that it is most natural to conclude that the figurines were still in use amongst the majority population in Persian Jerusalem.
