Abstract The article contests the view, which is now increasingly widespread, that the stories of the patriarchs and the Exodus were first combined in a literary composition by P. With examples from (I.) the non-Priestly Joseph-story and (II.) Ex 1 it is shown that already before P there were two versions of a narrative containing both patriarchs and Exodus. J incorporated the independent Israel-Judah-Joseph story, which ended in Gen 50,22, and continued it with Ex 1,8-12.22. In E, from whom the Jacob-Reuben version of the Joseph-story derives, Gen 50,15-21 was followed by Ex 1,6* (without »and that whole generation«) and 1,15-20bα (without »to Pharaoh« in v. 19). The two additions in Ex 1,6 and 1,19 were inserted by the (exilic) Jehovistic redaction. The Pentateuch redaction was responsible for Gen 50,24.26a (and other verses), while 50,25 and 26b are even later. Patriarchs and Exodus were therefore already combined in a literary form before P.
