Abstract The constitution Lumen Gentium, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the liturgy, do not show special appreciation of prophesy, nor of the prophets, in contrast with what happeens regarding the New Testament. In order to understand the image of the neotestamentarian prophet (quite different from the image of the prophet of the Old Testament), one must understand prophetism, as it was in the Greek surroundings and in the Judaic surroundings of the First century. Following, we study prophetism in the primitive Church (the pauline communities, Luke-The Acts, false prophets). Though, in the essentials, the few statements of the council, the catechism and the liturgy, coincide with the biblical message, it remains clear that the prophetic element constitutes a much more vivid, continued and conflictive dimension in the primitive Church than in the present one.
