Abstract The presence of theology in Qoholeth (Ecclesiastes) has long been disputed. The book's frequent use of hebel (“vanity” or “vapor”) has discouraged theological analysis. Attention to hebel's basic atmospheric sense, “vapor” allows a theological trace to emerge. This essay argues for a theology of reverence in Qoholeth that includes both the troublesome refrain and omission of the divine name.
