Abstract The article discusses the changes in American biblical archaeology that were driven by archaeologist William Foxwell Albright in Jerusalem, focusing on archival material that supported his success, housed in the American School of Oriental Study and Research, later called the American Schools of Oriental Research, directed successively by Charles C. Torrey and James A. Montgomery in the early 20th century. The author explores the British colonial situation in Palestine before World War I, Torrey and Montgomery's use of British colonial initiatives to advance American archaeology, and the implications of the end of the Ottoman Empire for archaeologists. Topics include the advocacy of archaeology by British Lieutenant General Stanley Maude and the founding of the Baghdad School 1920.
