Abstract Several analyses of the structure of Gen 1-11 as a parallelism in the form ABC... / A'B'C'... prove to be flawed and / or are not coherent with the demarcations created by the תּוֹלְדֹת formulae. However, by securing the limits of sections as well as subsections, and by establishing actual parallels working at the level of themes rather than using them as a criterion for demarcation, it is possible to obtain a consistent model integrating all the data. In this model, there are three levels of structure: the main sections delimited by the תּוֹלְדֹת formulae, the sub-sections with their own structure (e. g. the tower of Babel), and a parallelism of themes AB...F / A'B'...F' which reappear as one goes along the sections and sub-sections. As a result, new insights in the interpretation and the history of reception are highlighted.
