Abstract There are good reasons to assume that in Matt 5:33c the author refers to the decalogue (Exod 20:16) and probably means by οκ πιορκήσεις not “you shall not break your sworn promise“ (so John A.L. Lee) but “you shall not swear falsely.“ Matthew freely quotes the decalogue in four other antitheses and in 19:18 presents an equivalent citation. The whole of verse 33, with δέ in 33d, makes good sense.
