Abstract The literary function and theological intention of the poems of wisdom in the introduction to the Book of Proverbs (ch 1-9) is to introduce readers into the world of wisdom to be found in the chapters that follow. The wisdom in Prov 1-9 appears as a woman. This conception of wisdom as a woman is based on the proverbs in ch. 10ff. which represent an older stage of wisdom. The most interesting theological point is that Lady Wisdom stands nearly beside JHWH which shows how the authors of these texts tried to open the monotheistic point of view with the help of a Woman Wisdom at JHWH's side.
