Abstract This paper considers how the Khazneh was carved, suggesting that scaffolding was used on each of the levels of the rock-cut platform as work proceeded from the top down. It then considers the tomb façades of Meda’in Saleh as evidence for Nabataean architects designing and carving high quality tomb façades. Finally, the function and date of the Khazneh are considered, with the writer arguing that it is a tomb, carved during the reign of Aretas IV (9 BC — AD 40).
