Abstract The Macedonian conquest of the Persian Empire led to a complete change of coin production and circulation: 4th century coinages disappeared from the hoards during the 320s and were replaced by Alexander's silver tetradrachms and gold staters almost exclusively. Moreover, very small silver fractions, so frequently known during the 4th century, totally disappeared. Since 320, only large silver tetradrachms struck by Alexander and his heirs are found in hoards. From monetary systems full of small silver change used in daily life, the Levant began to hoard mostly large denominations used in sizeable payments.
