Abstract This paper makes the archaeological inventory of Persian defensive works and their mention in the ancient texts in Cyprus and in Cisjordan Palestine, trying to determine the evolution of the defensive policy of the different Achaemenid kings. Western Transeuphratene did not seem to have been protected by any fortification under Cambysus. Under Darius I a linear defense of the coast was made. In the reign of Xerxes and Artaxerxes I this defensive organization became much deeper, and then very pragmatic and rational under Artaxerxes II and during the last years of the Achaemenid control of the 5th satrapy. The question of the relationship between Cyprus and the Levantine coast in this defensive policy is asked.
