Abstract The prophet Gad plays a central role in the story of David's census and its aftermath in 2Sam 24. It is Gad's task to inform David about the three choices - three years of famine, three months being pursued by the enemy, or three days of pestilence - and to let him choose among them. But does David choose? A closer look at the passage reveals that it has been edited in various stages by Deuteronomistic editors, who included it in their History and added to it their theological emphasis. The passage suffered, however, a lighter and not always consistent editorial polishing in the textual line of the MT. The complex textual history of the passage - in Hebrew as well as in Greek - is witnessed by Chronicles and the Septuagint. However, the textual history of the Greek text has also complications of its own, resulting from its repeated approximation to the Hebrew text. In this part of the book (2Sam 11:2 - 1Kings 2:11), the main line of the Greek textual transmission to follow the so-called καίγε recension. This paper concentrates on the first appearance of Gad in 2Sam 24 and more precisely on textual issues in vv. 10-15. It is my aim to illustrate central issues in the textual history of the Books of Samuel as well as the methodology to be used in their study.
