Abstract The anonymous wise woman of Abel of Beth-Maacah (2Sam 20:14-22) is one of the strong female characters of the books of Samuel. Her political appearance on the city wall places her in the vicinity of personified Wisdom in Proverbs (1:21; 8:2f). The present contribution illuminates important literary aspects of the narrative and the figure of the woman and especially the background of the connection between "woman" and "city walls" to understand the plausibility of the iconic image. The woman on the city wall is found not only in the First Testament, but also in Greek literature and in the Neo-Assyrian relief sculpture.
