Abstract The focus of a lively group discussion was the on David's heroes in 2Sam 23:8-39. The material is divided into two clearly distinct lists : one in vv 8-23 names the heroes and tells something about them. This is particularly the case in the relatively longer anecdote in vv 13-17. The name Yahweh occurs four times in this list (vv 8, 10, 16, 17). The second section, vv 24-39a, names the heroes, mostly with their respective patronyms and/or places of origin, but doesn't give any further information about them. Verses 24a and 39b form an inclusio around this second list, thereby tying it as well to the previous list. The names mentioned in both lists are frequently not known from the foregoing Samuel narrative. The fact that they are not part of their context opens possibilities for questions on the origin and the organizational principle of the lists and the reason for transmitting such a document as well as its Sitz im Leben.
