Abstract At several places in the narratives in the books of Samuel, the Ark of God plays a significant role. Who were the ones taking care of (i.e. transporting, guarding, etc.) this cultic object, and what exactly was their task? Three times they appear in pairs (Hophni and Phinehas in 1Sam 4, Uzza and Ahio in 2Sam 6 and Abiathar and Zadok in 2Sam 15). Once, a single individual is to attend the ark (1 Sam 7:1). Arguing for an independent tradition for each of the passages, this article puts forward observations that show that even though there are differences, the texts in question still contain interesting similarities in their motifs and narrative structure. They themselves shed some light on the function of those men who were in charge of the Ark of God, mostly transporting it at politically and nationally important points in the narrative of the books of Samuel.
