Abstract In the David stories (1Sam 16 - 1Kgs 2) a lot of non-Israelite personalities are mentioned. Some of them - befriended leaders of tribes and peoples on the one hand, officials of David in high ranks on the other - play quite an important role in the respective plots. The present article lists the various occurrences of aliens. With regard to this overview the question, how a clear distinction between aliens and Israelites (and Judahites) can be made, comes up. The author observes that for aliens the gentilicium significantly is more often used than for Israelites and Judahites. A general impression of the "survey" is the - in the majority of cases - positive image drawn of aliens. Beside the importance of the aliens in the David stories (and in 1-2Sam in general) another motive, which is related to the latter, is noticeable: Some among the mentioned aliens seem to stand in a close relationship to Yahweh: for instance two Philistines swear in the name of the Israelite God, according to the Septuagint a Philistine warrior invokes Yahweh; Uriah, the Hittite, bears a Yahwistic name. The fact that aliens revere Yahweh is related perhaps to the conception of Yahweh as "god of territory". The final part of the contribution touches the question of the literary history of the relevant texts.
