Abstract This article makes a brief study of the social condition of the slaves in the first centuries of our era. It deals with th apostle Paul's concern about this level of the society and his interest in decreasing the circumstances that caused their exclusion. The focus of the analysis is the letter to Philemon - a rich slaves owner and Christian leader in Colossae - establishing points of contact with other Pauline statements regarding to this issue, as we find in Gal 3:28;4:2-7 and 1 Cor 7:20-24. Although important, the statements found in those letters whose Pauline authorship is disputed in the scholar circles were put away, e.g., Eph 6, where the author exhorts the slaves to bee obedient to their masters. The article starts based upon a historical perspective, supported by scholars who study the question of slavery in New Testament times, as Tomás Hanks, in the book El evangelio subversivo, and Scott Bartchy, in the book, Slavery on the New Testament. Then, it goes to a grammatical-linguistic perspective, using the morphological syntax as an analysis tool of some expressions of Paul, in order to understand better his speech.
