Abstract Judaism of the first Century was a pluralistic reality. A Jewish Reading of the New Testament as required by the Third Quest has to bear in mind this reality. 1 Pet 2,1-10 is read here in the context of Jewish pietistic Priesthood, known to us by the Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Essenes and the first Christians gave great importance to Baptism. Both insisted upon the spiritualization of the worship since priesthood and sacrifice are linked together. Similarities cannot hide the differences between the two communities. Jewish roots do not cancel the newness of Christianity.
