Abstract The purpose of this article is to give a contribution to the understanding of God's answer to Job (Job 38-41), in contrast to an exegetical tendency that sometimes even denies that there is an answer or at best maintains that a satisfactory answer is not provided. The author, on the contrary, believes that God indeed answers Job, but that this answer cannot be understood in the light of modern conceptual categories but rather in the light of the contemporary cultural world of Job's time: the pre-Socratic Greek thought (Anaximander and Heraclitus). The type of answer that God gives to Job is an alternative of philosophical nature compared to the ethical answer that the deuteronomic theology to the problem of the evil.
