Abstract The article proposes that composers and compilers of some medieval Easter dramas portrayed Mary Magdalene as a joculatrix Domini—a term derived from Francis of Assisi’s own reference to his friars as minstrels (joculatores) of the Lord. Comparing a variety of medieval sources concerning Franciscan preaching to songs Mary Magdalene sings in Easter dramas from Shrewsbury, Trier, and Prague reveals common registers of pious rhetoric in vernacular song and chant.
