Abstract During Trajan’s Parthian war the Jews of Egypt, Cyrenaica and Cyprus rose up in rebellion. Fanaticised by eschatological hopes and driven by messianic leaders, the rebels attacked their non-Jewish fellow citizens and destroyed the pagan sanctuaries. The once thriving Jewish diaspora was wiped out when the rebellion was put down by the Roman authorities; only in Alexandria a part of the Jewish community survived the disaster.
