Abstract In this essay Jewish Bible exegesis in Alexandria is for the first time investigated in light of Homeric scholarship, which simultaneously flourished in the city. It is shown that the Jewish authors engaged in the contemporary Greek discourse also in the field of hermeneutics, producing pioneering forms of interpretation. The latter is distinguished by its literary approach, which led to systematic commentaries as well as critical text analyses. The article focuses on Philo and his anonymous colleagues, with whom he debated.
